Applied Empathy

"I often say we've got a budget deficit that's important, we've got a trade deficit that's critical, but what I worry about most is our empathy deficit. History really doesn’t follow a straight line. It zigs and zags, but the trend lines ultimately will be in the direction of a less violent, more empathetic, more generous world. And that requires individuals fighting for that future. Learning to stand in somebody else's shoes, to see through their eyes, that's how peace begins. And it's up to you to make that happen."

- Barack Obama

The Shift

Empathy

noun

The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Applied Empathy

verb

Demonstrating that you understand another person's point of view so completely that their nervous system relaxes because they feel you get it and know they're not alone.

Research shows that empathy is not a trait.

Empathy is a skill that must be learned.

Having empathy for someone is not the same thing as demonstrating empathy.

"A riot is the language of the unheard."

- Martin Luther King Jr.

Empathy is not an emotion, it's a process; it's a way of listening and speaking that creates mutual understanding even with differences of opinion.
